No. 14 Indians sweep Southwest

Fulton, Miss. – In their only game of the week, the No. 14 Indians swept Southwest with an 11-2 run-rule victory in game one and a walk-off 6-5 win in game two.

Game 1: Indians 11, Bears 2

The Indians had six players pick up multiple hits in game one and got a complete game out of their starting pitcher.

Drew Capobianco (Saltillo) led the Indian's big offensive performance in game one going 4-for-4 and driving in three runs. Bailey Allbritton (Duck Hill), Lane Domino (Fulton), Tyler Murphy (Columbus) and Terris Meeks (Olive Branch) all added two hits in the contest and combined for three RBI and six runs scored.

Hayden Harris (Pontotoc) also picked up two hits, including a two-run home run over the scoreboard in the first inning that set the tone for the day.

On the mound, Will Armistead (Mooreville), who got an early 5-run lead from his offense, settled in and struck out eight in his seven innings of work. Southwest was able to scatter 9-hits and push across two unearned runs, but the deficit was too big to overcome. Armistead improves 3-0 this season.

Game 2: Indians 6, Bears 5

As it normally happens in MACCC doubleheaders, game two was a much closer contest. The Indians and Bears went back-and-forth but a walk-off single by Harris in the seventh gave the Indians the win and the sweep.

For every run by each team, the other had an answer and after four innings the Indians trailed 5-4, but Capobianco was able to push Meeks, who doubled to start the inning, across to score on a ground ball to tie the game at 5-5.

In the seventh, Harris was able to push a single through the right side of the infield to allow Domino to score and give the Indians the win.

On the mound, David Rowland (Florence, Ala.) picked up the win has he threw three and two thirds innings of one-hit baseball in relief to improve to 3-1 this season.

Next up for the Indians is another conference twin bill on Tuesday, April 6 against Coahoma. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
