Indians sweep Southwest Tennessee in season opener

Fulton, Miss. – The defending MACJC champions opened the 2020 season Tuesday with a pair of big shutouts winning game one 8-0 and a 16-0 run-rule victory in game two.

The Indians (2-0) offensive production started slow with one run in the first four innings of the doubleheader, but then exploded 23 runs over the next six innings.

Game 1: ICC 8, SW Tenn. 0

Freshman right hander Will Armistead (Mooreville) got their start in game one and picked up the win in his first college game by throwing an impressive four innings and striking out six, including four straight, and allowing only three hits and no walks.

When he exited the game, the Indians held a 1-0 lead courtesy of a Brett Coker (Hendersonville, Tenn.) RBI single in the third.

The Indians extended their lead in the fifth with Bailey Allbritton (Duck Hill) singling to score Terris Meeks (Olive Branch) and Tyler Murphy (Columbus) hitting a grand slam.

Coker added a two-run homerun in the sixth to give the Indians the 8-0 advantage.

David Rowland (Florence, Ala.) and Drew Monaghan (Saltillo) were able to keep the shutout intact with help of a double play with the bases loaded in the sixth.

Game 2: ICC 16, SW Tenn. 0 (5-innings)

In game two, the Indian bats picked up where they left off in game one as they batted around in the first three innings.

Riley Davis (Collierville, Tenn.) led the charge as he went 2-2 with 6 RBI as he hit a bases loaded triple in the first inning and ad three-run home run to center in the second.

Meeks also got in on the hit parade with a two-run double in the five run first innings. Lane Domino (Fulton) scored on a wild pitch prior to Davis' home run to give the Indians a 9-0 lead after two complete.

Coker doubled home a run in the third and later scored on a RBI single by Murphy. Allen Hall (Toccoploa) drove in a pair of runs later in the frame when he reached on an error that extended the lead to 13-0.

In the fourth, the Indians scored their final three runs on a RBI single by Allbritton, a sacrifice fly by Hall and Murphy scoring on a wild pitch.

Blaine Ware (Batesville) picked up his first college win with three innings of work and Hank White (Saltillo) and Malik Pogue (Martin, Tenn.) threw an inning each to help preserve the shutout.

The Indians will host Bevill State Tuesday, Feb. 11 with first pitch of the twin bill scheduled for 1 p.m.
