Indians split with Bevill State

FULTON, Miss. – In their first games in over a week due to rain, the Indians split a home doubleheader with Bevill State Community College winning game one 8-0 and dropping game two 2-1 Monday.

The Indians (5-1) scored early and often plating all of their eight runs in the first three innings, including four in the opening frame.

Kyle Crigger (Corinth) got things started in the with a leadoff double and scored on a single by Jackson Lancaster (Corinth). Justin Medlin (Ripley) added a RBI single of his own to score Lancaster, and Jacob Hall (Petal) drove in two runs on a single.

LaBryant Siddell (Belden) doubled in the second inning to score Crigger, who hit his second double of the game two batters earlier. 

The Indians had four consecutive hits in the third resulting in three runs as Lane Domino (Fulton) and Austin Powell (Star City, Ark.) had RBI singles and Russell Bunch (Saltillo) doubled home a run.

With an eight run cushion, Houston Harding (Walls) continued to control the Bears hitters as he threw five shutout innings allowing one hit and striking out six to improve to 3-0 this season.

Bevill State scored two runs off three hits and a pair of walks in the top of the first and the Indians answered with a run on a Siddell double to make it a 2-1 game.

After the opening frame, offense was scarce as the pitchers settled in and held batter to a combine five hits over the next five and half innings.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Indians loaded the bases with one out as Braden Ellis (Saltillo) and Hall singled and Brett Coker (Hendersonville, Tenn.) drew a walk. However, a pop up and fly ball ended the threat and the Indians dropped their first game of the season.

The Indians will face their first road test Wednesday as they travel to Decatur, Ala. for a twin bill with Calhoun Community College at noon.
