POPLARVILLE, Miss. – No. 18 Pearl River plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn a sweep of the No. 2 Indians with an 8-6 win in Game 2 on Friday.
The Indians (19-5, 5-3 MACJC) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in an interesting top of the first inning.
Connor Lewis (Corinth) struck out to start the game but reached safely when a ball in the dirt got away from the catcher. Kyle Crigger (Corinth) gave the Indians a 2-0 lead on a shot over the wall in right field.
Crigger was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored.
Jacob Hall (Petal) and Drew Thomas (Nesbit) followed with back-to-back singles and both advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Drake Wallace (Amory) drove in Hall on a one-out single before Hunter Nabors (Montevallo, Ala.) laced a single to score Thomas. Nabors put the Indians up 5-0 when he scored on the fifth wild pitch of the inning.
Thomas finished the game 2-for-4 with a RBI and run scored.
The Wildcats (22-4, 8-0 MACJC) answered with three-run home run by Simon Landry in the bottom half of the inning before making it a one-run contest on a RBI double by Bryson Medious in the second.
ICC picked up a run in the top of fourth when Hall walked, advanced on a pass ball and scored on a double by Thomas. Pearl River answered with a solo home run by Derek Eberly in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 6-5 contest in favor of the Indians.
Landry reached on a one-out double in the bottom of the sixth before back-to-back walks loaded the bases for the Wildcats. Wiley Cleland ripped a double just inside the bag at third to take a 7-6 lead. Pearl River added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Trenton Lee to plate Cleland.
Colby White entered in the sixth and closed the door on the Indians after giving up one hit and striking out two in the final two innings of the contest.
Crigger fell to 2-1 on the year after giving up three runs on three hits with one strikeout in one and two-thirds innings of work.
The Indians will look to rebound when they host rival Northeast Mississippi Community College (14-11, 5-5 MACJC) on Wednesday.
