No. 5 Indians sweep No. 19 Eagles; tying run thrown out at plate to end Game 2

FULTON, Miss. – Freshman outfielder Trey DeSantis (Laurel) fired a one-hopper from right field to home plate to keep the tying run off the board and seal the 4-3 Game 2 win for No. 5 Indians over No. 19 Meridian Community College with a 4-3 win in Game 2 on Saturday.

Catcher Hunter Nabors (Montevallo, Ala.) grabbed DeSantis' throw and tagged the runner two steps away from the plate to complete the sweep of the Eagles (14-6, 3-3 MACJC).

Meridian took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run by Trace Jordan in the top of the first and added on another run in the top of the third before the Indians (19-3, 5-1 MACJC) could find their first hit of the evening.

Connor Lewis (Corinth) started the bottom of the third with a laser over the wall in center field for his team-leading fourth home run of the season.

The Eagles answered with another run in the fourth on an Indian error.

Nabors sparked the Indians' bat with a double off the wall in the bottom of the fifth. Cason Milliorn (Olive Branch) singled to put a pair of runners on with one out in the inning. Kyle Crigger (Corinth) laced a single to the outfield to score Nabors. Justin Medlin (Ripley) beat out a great play and throw by Eagle shortstop CJ Hughes to plate Milliorn to tie game before smart base running by Crigger, who sprinted home when he noticed the Eagles were not paying attention after the play, to give the Indians the 4-3 lead.

Hunter Hughes (Saltillo) picked up his first win of the season in relief of starter Austin King (Fulton). Hughes gave up no run on two hits and struck out four in 1.2 innings pitched.

Crigger replaced Hughes in the sixth to earn his second save of the season after giving up a pair of hits in two scoreless innings of work.
